I had two females from my neochromis omnicaerulous makobe group in separate 10g tanks waiting for them to spit out their fry. They both started to spit the fry about 4-5 days ago. I noticed that about 40% of each batch are severely deformed. Some of the fry's tails are completely crooked causing the fry to spiral all over the place.

The other weird thing i noticed is that some of the fry have absorbed all their yolk sack while others still have about 60% left. I am not sure why some would develop so fast while others would not. I have not seen that before.

And it was from both females, not just one. It was their first time holding as far as i know. Their are no other species in that tank so no cross breeding to blame. the only thing is that they are my f1 females with f0 males. not sure why that would bring out more deformities but if it happens again i will have to remove the original males and leave the younger ones.

has anyone else seen this before?? I get deformed fry every now and then, mostly missing gill plates or crooked mouth. but bent tails or spines, not used to that. i have not changed my diet either so not sure what brought about this batch.

not worried about the fry though, they make a small snack for my lima shovel nose!!!!

This has happen with some of my WC mbuna when they have large spawns. It's like the eggs in the back of the mouth are deformed because there is not enough room. The deformed ones were always the last to come out when I stripped the females. They always had the curled tails.
