This may sound like a stupid question, but I've noticed quite a few very experienced fish breeders on here. Now I am a former dog breeder and female dogs come in season twice a year so it is fairly easy to know when and how to breed. Spawning, to me, is much more confusing. How do you know if a female is "ready?" Obviously you keep the male and female(s) together in the same tank, but for instance I have Christmas Fulus my males is "always" doing his breeding "dance" but the females mostly just run from him. Is there a way to know when the females are ready? I have noticed my one female has been eating a lot lately and gained a lot of weight, is this a sign that she is preparing to drop her eggs and getting ready for the holding where she does not eat? Or is there some other reason for the weight gain. I watch these fish daily and for hours at a time sometime and I do notice small changes, but I just don't quite "get" the spawning routine, since the male always seems ready to go.

Sorry this is so lengthy, but I really would like to understand this better, if there is a way to. :)

Thanks for reading!!!

Kathy

Most of the regulars here on the forum have been breeding for many years. I myself have been breeding fish for over 10 years. With Vic's the males will display for the females all the time. When the females are ready to breed they will follow the male and spawn. You can tell when a female is close to being ready to breed when her tube drops. This is is harder to see with a untrained eye. With larger fish like frontosa it is easy to see, but with Vics it can be hard to see.
Some female Victorian cichlid will breed every 6 to 8 weeks. Some are harder to breed than others. My Neochromis rufocaudalis, Pundamilia sp. "red flank", and Paralabidochromis sauvagei (Makobe) breed every 6 to 8 weeks. My Labrochromis ishmaeli and Pundamilia Nyererei -Senga Island- are very hard to breed.

the female will eat more and fatten up. it is hard to see looking at them from the side but if you get a look heads up you can tell when they get wide. They will look bloated almost in the lower stomach region.

then like jim said the tubes will come down, but they are not that large. egg layers will have larger tube that protrude which are easier to see. But the females will be fat and happy. keep and eye out for them chewing bubble gum, that is the good sign that babies are on the way. :P

Yep! Mrs. Fulu was fat! Now she is holding. :) I'm excited. I do have more questions now, but maybe for another thread.
