I was watching my P. Chromogynos spawning. This is the subdominant male and he had been chased to the far side of my 72 g. He has the benefit of some real nice flat rocks on that side of the tank. Anyway, he found a female to spawn with and she and he started doing the spawning dance on his rock... she started laying eggs... and HE raced her to pick up the eggs. She got some and he got some, now HE appears to be HOLDING!!! What the heck is that about????

Do the P. Chromogynos males hold the brood too? Can those fish change sex?? I know that is probably a dumb question. but I had 4 males in the tank and took one out that left 3. The 3rd one was getting bullied so I took him out. That left 2. Now it looks like I have 3 again and I can't figure this out!!! These fish are just strange! :)

Any help, info would be greatly appreciated. I have a lot of time so I spend it sitting by my fish tanks and I have 2 or 3 females holding and 1 MALE!!!

Thanks,

Kathy

it is rare for african males to mouthbrood, but it is not unheard of. I doubt the eggs would have been fertilized if he picked them up right away.

It is possible that one of your females was another young male, that happens also.

I have seen this happen before. I had a male Pundamilia macrocephala hold full term. I thought he would lose the eggs after a couple of days but he held.

I think he ate them. He's not holding them anymore, but it was suggested that since he was the subdominant male he might have just been hungry and new at what he was doing. :) Oh well. At least the female did get some so hopefully, there are fry coming! Cross your fingers and thank you for your advice!!!
