i have a tank that is being over run with them sorry malysian trumpet smails, i absoultly hate them and want them gone. i have tries the romaine lettuce, no results they would rather feed off the glass, so i keep it very clean. i have tried almost every type of loach available. still no progress.
so now im ready to use some copper as i know inverts cannot handdle it. im not worried about the effects of the mass dye off this is a very well established tank that dissolved a three inch dead fish in two days a couple years ago. with no ill effects.

so im concidering the use of copper, maybe coppersafe, but some where deep in the recesses of that cavern i call my brain i vaugly rember something that copper or the use of copper safe can cause sterility.

has any any input on that?

get assassin snails.
they will eat the other snails.
you would then have assassin snails, but not a million of them as they don't breed as much.

Just a link to something I just read http://www.planetinverts.com/malaysian_ ... snail.html towards the end he talks about how to at least keep their numbers down. On another note would a couple good sized juvenille oscars be able to handle them? I know they are gaga for snails in general. I have seen pretty small oscars (4 inches) tank on some decent sized snails.

good luck, even if you kill them off their eggs can last for a while. Even dry they last quite a while.

i had a puffer that did some good damage but just like with loaches the snails hide in the substrate and avoid being eaten. They are hard to remove.

But me i like them. i throw them in every tank i have. What i noticed is that if there is no substrate they dont live long.

I think taking out your substrate for a while then replacing it with new should do the trick.

the mts is one of the hardest to get rid of, not very much can eat them with their hard pointy shell and their trap door. If you want them gone your best bet is to tear down and nuke the tank, toss everything and let the empty tank and filter sit with bleach in them for a few week. Even then you may not get them all.

Personally they never bothered me too much till they caused a PH crash, so I just got a few assassin snails and put 1-2 in every tank to keep their numbers in check.

Platyraeniodus degeni is a snaileater, Labrochromis ishmaeli as well. In my tanks I have hundreds of these trumped snails. In the tanks of the P.degeni and L. ishmaeli there are none.

they are a live bearer, but their eggs live in the shells in a cyst i think.

im not sure how they do it but i think it is a mechanism to survive droughts.

Too many risks with copper, getting to the lethal strength for snails is getting too close to a harmful strength for fish. It takes more copper to kill the mts

my soultion to the problem.

i used a product called snail b gone. it contains copper. i removed the lone fish in the tank. dosed the tank with snailb gone. to my suprise 4 hours later they were dead. since the substrate is very fine gravel i strained it all thru a net to collect the dead snails, crap there was a bunch.

i installed a charcole carbon filter, did half a water change. will wait a day and repeat the water change. and replace with a new carbon. wait a week and put back the fish.

we will see how well this works.

I had a go around last year with 5 of my tanks that caught some from a bag of fish I bought from the MCA. I bought five bags of fish from the same person. anyway the only thing I could use was copper safe to kill these nasty stuff. All fish was left in the tank and about a week there was back to normal. too this day they are still giving me fry. So as far as the copper goes I still getting fry.

I know the tiny puffer eat mts.

That product will cause a mass kill off but will not get them all. I still recommend one assassin snail, not sure if they are asexual, if they are not then you will only end up with one snail.
