Jim, rattler is good eats! Just gotta cut off its head and bury it before you do anything else with it. The old adage 'a rattler don't die till sundown' is quite true. You can decapitate, skin and paunch it and it will still coil up and strike for several hours.
I'm kind of hoping I run across a good sized one when I'm out in the woods with my machete.... I need to learn how to clean 'em and cook 'em.

I've seen them cleaned. Not too much too it. If I was in Colorado or wherever it is they have that festival I would likely partake. I have yet to try it though.

I have had plenty of rattle snake.
At our cabin every time you went out to water the tree there would be one, so I always carried 3 rounds of snake shot just in case in my 38.
Always made for a nice snack.

I use to live in Coalinga when I was a kid, and there are tons of rattlers around there. When I worked on the ranch out on Jane Ave I killed at less 2 a year on the ranch. I don't mind gofer or king snake I just hate the ones that rattle

I have a nice size King snake that lives in my backyard. He is about 3 foot long. He loves to work around the garden. My dogs don't even bother him.

I heard once that it is more pleasant to be be bitten by a Cobra and die, than it is to be bitten by a Rattle snake and live.

something about feels like you are being hit with a baseball bat over and over for 20 hours straight.

The more you know ;)

I have a 5 ft black racer that lives in my back yard, I don't bother him and he don't bother me... Unless hes in the kids play house then he gets shooed off.
When I was younger there was an 8-9 ft indigo snake that lived in the neighborhood he was a beauty! Most of the neighbors were quite fine with him because they eat poisonous snakes for the most part. Well a new neighbor moved in and the last time I saw him he was thoroughly beaten  So my little 7 y/o self went and chewed the new neighbors a new one and informed them that they had killed an endangered snake and that when the rattlers, moccasins and coral snakes came back they had only themselves to blame! A week or 2 later they had a water moccasin in their pool

rattle snake is pretty good, so is python. but they can be very chewy. you need to tenderize them or cook them down a lot.

Similar texture, darker meat, much higher protien and much lower fat. Easy to over cook.
