"Erwin Schraml and Herbert Tichy name the new cichlid Haplochromis katonga after its type locality, in the latest issue of the journal Aqua, International Journal of Ichthyology.

Haplochromis katonga is distinguished from congeners by its small size and a combination of the following morphological characters: body depth less than 35% standard length, head length 34.7-37.5% standard length, snout length 21.5-28.7% head length, eye diameter 33.8% head length, less than 31 scales in the midlateral line, straight dorsal head profile, and males with bluish to dark greyish brown on dorsum, flanks greenish, ventral parts yellowish, with reddish areas in unpaired fins.

The Katonga River connects the Lake George and Lake Victoria basins in eastern Africa." ~ Practical Fishkeeping
