Hi guys,

Am new to Lake Victoria cichlids, but am going to be doing this for years to come God willing. I recently got 'wild catch' species from Hippo Point area near Kisumu Kenya and have kept them in my home built tank outside here in Nairobi Kenya. Several species have spawned, some I have yet to determine. Thanks for your help in this!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKZvkmJBTNA Lithochromis xanthopteryx?! The male that comes in the end I am pretty sure, the one spawning not so sure, is much smaller

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9RqHfv9P5o Haplochromis sp. "red back scraper" perhaps?!

Oreochromis niloticus Oreochromis niloticus

Hi,

I saw your video. Nice!!
Where did you collect your fish?
The "Tilapia" is not O. niloticus.

Hi the first fish on vid isn't L.xanthopteryx( the body color is too far from the fish known)The blue one that is spawning. I'm not sure at all that this fish belongs to the Lithochromis genus as its head profile doesn't match the Lithochromis. It's an undescribed species. :) The second species( the dark blue male with red-orange fins has a too pointed snout even if the body color seems close. I'll post the list of fishes caught at Kisumu to help to identify because L.xanthopteryx is not yet recorded in the kenyan shores(this doesn't mean that it doesn't live here but that it hasn't been recorded. In another hand some Pundamilia species and lithochromis species has been caught in the Victoria Nile so it could be possible to see some Lithochromis in the Kenyan waters. In what type of habitat did yu caught this fish?? it's very important to know that.
the second fish seems to be what yu said(Red back craper is the real obliquidens) based on the male body and color form, the female looks a little like a nyererei so that's why some pix are easier to help identify but more pics are needed for both species to really see what they might be.
The tilapine looks like Oreochromis esculentus an east african species endemic from the Victoria basin
xris :)

Thanks xristof for the detailed info! Who has generated the species list? Am interested to get to know people/organizations working in this space. Have got a contact already at the Kenya Marine Fisheries Research centre in Kisumu. Will google the species from the list and see what I can find. Do you recommend any particular sources of info?

My fish all come from Hippo Point area, Kisumu. Have just posted another picture of the "red back scraper" male on twitter: https://twitter.com/LakeVicCichlids

Hi Mark this species list is from a scientific article written by Les Kaufman in 1993, its tittle survey of the cichlids remnants fauna in northern shores of lake Victoria. If yu need I can search some articles about Kenyan and Ugandan waters but there are not a lot.
If yu have a fish from a place, try to know in what kind of habitat, sand or rocks or plants.??that really makes the difference yu can try to find some infos on fishbase.com or here
http://archive.org/details/bulletinofbritis39zoollond
here
http://www.refworks.com/refshare/?site= ... eehausen,O
here too
http://www.eawag.ch/about/personen/home ... ehauso/pub
the two latest are less about northern shores but yu may find some interresting infos in them
xris :)

Hi Mark,

I am also based in Nairobi.

I have some wild caught Astatoreochromis alluaudi, Pundamilia Nyererei and Pseudocrenilabrus philander and afew malawi mbuna's

I would like to get some more victorian cichlids, can you assist?

Planning a trip to Kisumu and Yala for colleting more cichlids especially Mbipi Lutea.

Keep in touch.

Imran.
