My blue obliquidens group has turned out to be 4m/1f. I'd like to try leaving a "pair" alone in a tank after Kevin's success in getting them to spawn that way, but I'm not sure where to put the three lesser males. I can't set up any additional tanks right now, so here's what I've got along with the tanks' current inhabitants:
75g - 5 blue obliquidens
75g - 4m/7f juv. red flank & 1m/3f zebra obliquidens
40B - 2m/6f juv. P. macrocephala
125g - 30 - 35 X. phytophagus

Thoughts on where I might put everybody to get the two BOs alone? Thanks!

well, i would not put them in with any other females. the urge to breed would be great. if you have no choice my pick would be the phytophagus tank. just because of the large numbers, they should keep the extra males in check.

I was thinking more along the lines of some major swapping around. Maybe I'd stick the ZOs in with the phytophagus, move the macros over with the red flanks, and put the three BO males in the 40B, for example. I've got spare tanks and filtration to where I could set up a separate tank for the the three BOs, but I'm getting ready to move and the wife would be none too pleased to see what she would interpret as expansion. Plus, I'll be staying with a friend for a couple months until our new house is ready and I don't want to add tanks to his house beyond what he is already expecting.

if you moved the p. macs somewhere then ya the 40br should be good for them. Just take out anything that could be a territory so they dont fight over it. I got 8 P mac males and 6 neo. makobe males in a bare 40br for 3 weeks now and no problems. i do expect to loose one or two but with that many guys in the tank they can spread out th agression

So the ZOs to the 125 with the phytophagus, the P. macs to the 75 with the red flanks, and the three extra BO males to the 40B by themselves? It's my understanding that the macrocephala females differ enough in appearance from most other Pundamilia females so as to make it relatively safe to house the species together without fear of cross-breeding. Is that right?

Another option would be to move the macros to the 75 with the red flanks, put the BO "pair" in the 40B, leave the three extra BO males in the 75 where they are and add the ZOs from the tank with the red flanks..

Yea the females are much darker and the body shape is different. They have a rounder snout and thicker body. if you have enough of each species they usually are attracted to their own species. The colors on the males make a big difference though. The males will take whatever comes by, the females have to choose properly is my understanding.

i think your second choice should be ok.

The pair has been isolated for three days now. Still just a potato.

I'm thinking I'll try adding a second male to put some color on ol' boy. He's pretty pale in there with just the female. I wouldn't want to **** him like that, either.

Think so? I think they've just been very discrete - I caught a glimpse of him working on her when I walked by the fish room last night. He still wasn't colored up as well as he was before I moved them, but he was definitely making his moves. Maybe it's just a dud female..
