hi experts,

i have a batch of 9 Pundamilia nyererei (Ruti Island) imported from Czech. i can confirm these are ruti island as the have 7 strips and mid yellow color body and blue dorsal fins.
they are 2 inches now. i observed and can confirmed i have 1 female (plain sliver) in this batch. :(

my Pundamilia nyererei (Ruti Island) do not color up red instead only slight orange.
only 2 larger males 2.5 inch have a slight orange colors on the top body dorsal. and this depends on mood and aggression too.
sometimes they look plain silver.duh! :x
the rest of the males are very dark on the lower body and mid body is yellow when aggressive.
they don't look really nice like the photos on the Internet. i hope i do not have hybrids.....

i have some questions.
1) at what size will they color up nicely to red?
2) does females have color, strips and egg spots too?
3) how do i confirm if i have females or males esp those very dark colors ones i have....
4) is ruti island more yellow/orangie compared to other variants which has striking red colors makobe?
5) i tried a single male in a all male tank and he looked plain sliver
do i have to keep 2 males or 1 male + females for the males to colorup nicely?
6) how many males can i keep in a 67 gallon tank?

thanks

Hi johnchor,
you may just need a little patients, this is a male i have at 4cm
Image

in the group some are more orange, some show a lot of yellow on the flanks and when squaring up can darken on the underside.
females can carry egg spots but only males have a dark 'halo' ring around them, some females are silver-some a little darker.

offer lots of cover and i tend to offer cover in the form of plastic plants that hang from the glass along the back.

here is a mature male at a club house on the west coast of France

keep us up to date :P

Hello Jim and Paul,

Thanks for reply!
my batch of Ruti looks like the 1st picuture of paul's ...Same!...

they are 2.5inch now, but they are never near paul's 2nd pic.
at what size they color up like paul's 2nd picture?
and do they maintain thier colors when keep as a single fish in a tank by itself?
how big do ruti males grows?

i also have HAP sp.44 redtails, i notice Ruti are very aggressive when compared to Redtails...what you think about this?

thanks

when the top picture was taken they were sharing the tank with a large hap.cyaneus which is a very lively fish. since removing these and leaving the nyererei with a group of 16 piceatus and a trio adult Enterochromis paropius
same male courting a female at the time
Image

I would say he is little over 2" and believe they max out at 3.75",but the colours have subdued since the courting has stopped.
I would split up the sp.44's,i never like mixing this fish with other vics !
Other companions could be chilotes, sauvagei, Neochromis rufocaudalis, Astatotilapia latifasciata or Astatoreochromis alluaudi.
when keeping a 'community' you will need a much larger volume of water and decor to suit, i like the example of 300 ltr for single species + 100 ltrs for every additional species.
hope this helps :)

Hello Paul,

Thanks for your reply again
ok my ruti are 2.5 inch and not even close to picture3
they just look like picture1 or darker. but not RED like yours.

do you mean that ruti only color up fully/nice when they are courting and breeding?
maybe my ruti did not colorup as i suspected again i have 9 males and no females!!! thus no courting/breeding but only Fightling...

i am keeping my 9 ruti in a 67gal with 5 Hap sp.44 Redtails and a single 5inch German Red peacock. it is really warzone there.....

my final goal is to let the ruti grow up to adult size and select the most colorful male to transfer to my all male malawi/mixed 120 gal tank.
but i am not too sure if ruti will color up in a all male tank...
maybe Hap sp44 is a better choice? :?:

thanks again Paul Sir
