Will be staying at Stuart Grant's station.
Hopefully i will get alot of actual fish pictures to post.

Yeah, i'm going to Malawi.
Tanganyika didn't work for me this time.

I may head out to Tanganyika later and meet up with Dr. Takahashi, but I think i'm heading to South America instead to check out the cold water cichlids.

If you are planning to do a tour in the future, here is a general look at the cost.

Flight $2500.
I have been watching for 3 months out, and i have seen the range of $1800 to $5000.
so for me getting my ticket 2 weeks out, i'm cool with the price.
I'm coming from SFO, if you are coming from NY or Miami your price will be about $500 less.

Lodging $1500.
This includes meals and boat crew. We won't be staying all the time at the lodge, there are days when we will be away from the lodge and staying in tents around the lake.
No wiggle room on this price, unless you stay someplace else, in which case you would not be with our group.

Vaccines and anti malaria pills. $300.
depending on your insurance.

Incidentals. $500.

So you are looking at roughly $5000.

Do you have a fancy underwater camera? I've seen pictures of Konings large camera/flash (or maybe that was his video camera). I don't imagine you can get away with a cheap underwater camera in the lake.

Most underwater photographer's use a Ikelite housing and Either Canon or Nikon DSL.
I have the same set up that Juan Migual uses Ikelite with Nikon D70, though i don't have the light set up he uses.
yeah, this setup is not cheap, Ikelite housings run about $1500.

I recall seeing Ad also with a Ikelite setup, and I know he uses a D90 from my last travel with him, but he has multiple setups.
He just leaves his gear at Stuart Grants station because he goes there all the time.

I have a couple setups.
My movie cam is JVC with an underwater housing rated for 60ft.
I have a sony vid cam with ikelite housing.
I have a Canon point and shoot with a ikelite housing.
I have Nikon D70 with ikelite housing.

Im not taking my Nikon, as if it gets lost i will be pissed.
The ikelite systems are expensive and heavy and big.
So i'm taking a small point and shoot with quality housing.
and my movie cam with JVC housing.
Both these housing run over $500, alot less then my ikelites, but still will be pissed if these get lost.

I'm not going below 30ft, so these other housing won't have any problems as they are rated for 60ft.
The ikelites are rated for 150 to 200 ft.

Packing all this stuff is a headache!

One Pelican 1600 hardcase takes up my BC and Regulator!
I have not even got to my fins, mask, wetsuit or cameras!
then sleeping bag, clothes.
shoot, i may only have space for my walk around speedo's!

I was hoping to only do one checked bag/case.
I can't see how i can do this with less than 2 checked and 1 carry on.
Oh well, whats another $300 when you already have $5k in to the trip!
I'm not so worried about the extra baggage fees, as having two checked bags increase chance of something getting lost or damaged.
$1000 in dive gear in one case, $1000 in camera gear in the other.

yeah, it would be cool for us to hang out there Big Jim!
Don't worry, though Konings may not do another group trip, we can get something going.
I'm most likely going to be heading out again by myself or with a select few again very soon.

Get your SCUBA certification and gear in the meantime.

won't have to win lottery.

By cutting down on days stayed to about 7 that will cut down the price.

The cost for flight, and purchasing own gear can be controlled but not eliminated.
By purchasing your gear early, the cost won't be such an impact.

Start saving early.
Flight will be $1500 to $3000.
I think we can do the lodging for about $1000 for 7 days.

If you get your gear early, then come that time you will only be having to worry about $2500 to 4000.
