This is how I make my own bow's for shipping. I always use 4x18 or 6x18 tube poly bags. I ship one fish to a bag. I can ship 8 fish to a 12x12x8 USPS box. You can order these box's online and they are FREE. Here are some pictures of how I make my box's.

Free USPS 12x12x8 Priority Box. You can upgrade them to Express and added FREE Express Stickers on them.

I use 1 inch thick styro sheet from Lowe's. The sheet is only 7/8 thick. The lids are cut at 12x12.

Side of the box are cut at 12Lx6&2/8H and 10&3/8Lx6&2/8H. I like to make the box to have a tight fit that's why I cut one side at 10&3/8L. MAKE SURE YOU CUT STRAIT NOT AT A ANGLE. YOU WANT YOUR BOX TO SEAL AS GOOD AS IT CAN.

When making the box I will start at the bottom of the box. I will tape the box and cover any openings in the box with tape.

Now I start to add the styro to the box.

Then I add news paper for extra insulation.

Now I'm ready to add fish. After adding the fish I can add the heat pack, more newspaper, and then seal the top of the box like the bottom.

i am going to give this a try. i had thought about it before but i never went with it. we have a farm store here where you can buy the propack styro and box for like 5$. so it was to easy to buy instead of making them. but this is way cheaper than that.

but i am getting some plain cardboard boxes just to try different size boxes. the good thing about usps is that they go by weight and not dimensional weight like fedex or ups. so the size of the box is not so relevant.

it takes a little more work to make a box but you end up saving more money. and you can make any size you want.

thanks for the photos and write up.

There are 3 box's you can use for shipping, 12x12x8, 12x12x5.5, 12x8x5.5. I order 75 of the 12x12x8 at a time. I usually get one box of 25 of the other 2 sizes. Out of a sheet of 4x8 styro I can get about 5 12x12x8 box's. The sheet of styro cost around $10.00.

Here is the link to where I order my box's.

I use that method for small fry and fish during the summer.
Once I get my sw air cargo acct I will mostly use them. I pick up used fish boxes from the lfs I work at

We don't have SW in Fresno. If we ship airport to airport we have to use American or Delta. Both these cost over $100 to ship a box this size or a big box. We have to depend on USPS,UPS, and FedEx. We would love to have SW in Fresno.

SW is like $60 for a really big box. So on big orders it is well worth it. It is about the only practical way to ship 100 moorii fry :D

Go to the USPS Store and click on the priority mail not the flat rate box's. On page 5 on top you will find the 12x12x8 box's.

found it. i ordered some yesterday too.

dman were did you get you heatpacks? i have been looking for 72hr one but have not found a good deal on them yet.

and bag buddies work well. just mix a large batch of water. i usually use 1 per 1.25g. Also i heard of people using methalyne blue for shipping too. i think it helps oxygenate the water and prevent most types of infections from starting.

Ken's fish has some 72 hour heat packs. I get mine by the case at Superior supplies here in Cali.
