ok so I had a mishap and need some sugestionsa few months ago I discovered my tank heaters were being recalled the marineland stealth pro so I contacted marineland and they were great and shipped me new heaters for my tanks. I have a 29 gallon tank setup that I use for my females when they carry so i can strip them and make sure my fry are all safe. Last Wednesday I had 2 redflanks holding the 29 gallon tank was about 68* so I un-boxed the replacement heater they sent me set it to 76* and let it go over night. on Thursday I moved the females and planed on stripping them on Saturday. One of the one female's I am assuming spit the fry and ate them over night for some unknown reason but they were gone on Friday so she went back into the 150 with the rest of the colony and I kept the one still holding in the 29. On Saturday I woke up to find her floating in the tank and no sign of any fry. I opened the lid to remove her and check in the rocks and caves for fry and was hit with a blast of heat the temp in the tank was almost 100*. I contacted marineland to try to get another heater because this one apparently malfunctioned. The person I spoke with was great they put a order in to replace the heater and now want to compensate me for my loss which is alot more than I expected. but I am unsure about the information they want. I explained that they were Victorians and they don't have a compensation price for redflanks and asked if I could get any type of documentation of what the retail pricing would be not the hobbyist price on a business card or letter head, I explained that these type of fish are unavailable in the retail world so they requested any kind of pricing documentation on redflanks pricesdoes anyone know where or how I can get this from. thanks for looking

you can try Daves rare fish, also in texas, he may be able to put something on a letterhead for you.

He does not have redflanks listed now, but im sure he has in past so he should be able to whip something up for you.

Heaters are a problem.

In heater thermastats/controllers are much more likely to fail than an external controller would.

When having high dollar fish, your best bet is to have an external controller and then have individual elements that plug into the controller.

I have seen people have a $500 acrylic tank, $1500 frontosa colony (or rare vics!), $500 filtration system, manage the water parameters like a mad scientist, and yet use $30 heaters.
Heaters are what can kill your fish quickly if they fail.

The safest and most economical bet of course is to have a fish room with a gas heater.

I've gone to Aqueon Pro heaters since the ML Stealth stuff crapped out. They've been real solid for me so far.

Jager Ebo/Eheim heaters. TXmartin, you might want to see what Marco's price is for P. Red Flanks and convert that number to US currency. It would be at least some documentation for you, and is where the Red Flanks you got came from originally.

I agree that heating the room is the safest thing to do, that's what I do in the winter.

heating the air does not work as well as heating the water. it takes a lot more energy to heat the air-water then the other way around.

if you had a recirculating system it is a little safer to heat a sump for the system then each tank, it would take a lot longer to get to 100f!

I have a myriad of heaters. jagers are good, visa therm ok, and hagen. you just have to be careful with them, if they get knocked around it could damage the temp control. or like i do sometimes let the tank drain to much exposing the heater then fill it up and you hear ssssssssss POP!!! yea that sucks.

I keep my house at fishy temp 75-77*F but in the winter I rarely run the house heater I just close up the fish room and slap in a big ceramic space heater.
I rather use the extra electric than risk fried fish.....

I would use multiple under rated heater, that way if one locks on it will not cook your fish, and you have back up when it actually quits.
I took the money from marineland and have yet to replace them. The external controllers are expensive, but they are in my front tank.
I will just get what John at Jehmco recommends and do the under rated trick...
