So me and my kids went down to the ditch about a block away where I have seen fish. Looks like we caught 3-4 different kinds along with some ghost shrimp! My son even caught a dragonfly larvae so they got to learn about those and why we didn't want to bring it back. I managed to net a small red eared slider turtle so they could check it out and then we put it back. All in all it was pretty fun and we all got good and muddy
I put everything we brought home into an empty 10g with a sponge filter that I just cleared out.
I will get pics of all the fish and shrimp that we caught, but it will have to wait till morning, I am beat!
Looks to me like live bearers and/or killifish. I am going to need help IDing these guys for sure! There are spotted ones and stripey ones and some plain silver ones.

ah very cool. i went sunday morning. i was dead tired from working the nigh before so i did not do as much netting as i usually do but i still had fun.

i can help with a couple. my native knowledge is minimal at best. but i do go with some very experienced guys who can id just about anything. they actually wrote an extensive book about collecting through out the US. i forgot the name but it might be something like the NANFA american collecting guide or something.

you probably foundL
gambusia (mosquito kili)
blue fin kili

and some i whose name escapes me.

It looks as if you had lot's of fun. You can never know what you might find in all the water there in Florida. Just stay away from the ones with teeth. When I was back there 15 years ago I saw lot's of gators in the water.

The ditch isn't big enough to house a gator, I did keep a good eye out for water moccasins though because I know they live in that ditch. My kids were noisy enough to scare most of the critters off I am sure!
It really was a lot of fun. If I can ID these and if some folks want some that would give me a great excuse to do it again

Gambusia Affinis seems to be the fat live bearer, I have lots of little ones in there of those as well.

Heterandria Formosa, seem to be the ones with the not solid stripe running along them. http://www.seriouslyfish.com/profile.ph ... osa&id=122

Jordanella floridae looks to be the odd shaped spotty one, looks like It may be a female

you got most of them right fern. the vertical stripe ones are the formosa, gambusia are the single horizontal striped ones and the spoty one looks like some kind of perch maybe.

you dont find as many cotton mouths as people think. usually they are brown water snakes which are much more docile than cotton mouths.

some nice fish to look for are chrysotus, shiners, dwarf sunfish, and all exotics.

just dont keep any sport fish, its not legal.

I used to go mucking about quite a bit, I have seen my fair share of cotton mouths and rattlers. Typically they just run off, the really big cotton mouths tend to hold their ground though. The best thing to do is walk back the way you came with the big boys.

The spotty one is a Florida flag fish for sure. Once he passes QT he will go in my planted sump to help with the hair algae issue I am having in there.
The Heterandria Formosa may end up as dithers for the rams (thanks Dre) and apistos I am getting. Looks like they are happy with the same conditions and would be too small to eat any fry.

With how much my son enjoyed getting these I may have to take him and we may check out a few other spots I have been eying. May even set him up a native tank!

Ya if I do find that I have accidentally gotten any sports fish fry they will be returned to where I got them from.
