I am being offered a quad of fish from a breeder I trust. He says they are A variant of the Christmas Fulu found in Yala Swamp. They originated with the Oyers in Michigan. Does anyone know anything about this variant? I wanted to check before I get them.

He also has the Mbipia cf Lutea Crossbarr Yala swamp, and says that this is a different strain of fish.

Thanks

Xystichromis phytophagus is the Xmas fulu and I don't think there is a "variant of the Christmas Fulu found in Yala Swamp". It either is or it isn't the real deal. The only thing I can think of is that it might be the Haplochromis sp. "dayglow" which is very similar and also from Yala Swamp. Paul Louiselle considers these two different species but Les Kaufman thinks they are almost imperceptable color and size variations of the same species.

John Oyer is a great breeder with nice fish but he doesn't exactly make much effort to keep up on the current naming conventions.

Interesting. They are coming from James Gibbons who used to run African Cichlid Central. His fish are usually really good, but I am unsure of dealing with another identification issue like I had with the Hap sp Crossbar Yala Swamp. What are your thoughts?

HI As Kevin said, no H.phytophagus(xmas fulu) has been fished from Yala swamp and made it to the hobby, the two species H.dayglow and H.phytophagus have been caught in Kanyaboli lake. So to be sure, take :) a look at H.phytophagus to look if yur fish is the same.

Yea, I agree. James does have some nice fish.

It's been way too many years since I kept this species for me to ID one this young. Time will tell.
