This picture was taken when he was being moved so hes a little stressed in the pic.
I bought him from an lfs out by my brother just labeled as Flameback Cichlid, but after some searching i believe he is Xystichromis sp. "Kyoga Flameback" but am not entirely sure.
Anyone got any ideas?

I'm not sure myself. The Haplochromis sp "Kyoga flameback" is usually yellow on the lower half of the body with red all around the "face". The middle bar is usually black.

The Haplochromis sp. "flameback" is a different species and it is usually a bluish or aqua in the lower half of the body. It too shows a bit of a horizontal bar when stressed but it's just a darker color blueish rather than a different color like black.

What does he look like when not stressed? I'm guessing Kyoga flameback at this point.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Xystochromis have vertical bars, not lateral lines.

Both Haplochromis sp. "flameback" and Haplochromis sp. "Kyoga flameback" are undescribed species. Neither one of these species has been scientifically assigned to the genus Xystichromis. Although this potential genus assignment seems to be accepted in the US, it's far from universally accepted.

Here is an article on Xystichromis phytophagus:
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/x_phytophagus.php

And here is an article on the "Xystichromis" Kyoga flameback:
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/x ... meback.php

Neither one shows vertical bars. (Although many vics show some vertical barring when stressed)

Thanks, Kevin.

So is the IUCN redlist an an American only deal? I guess that is where I am confused, as this fish is listed as is on the list, stating it is endangered.

Thank you
