I bought a dozen of these as fry about 1 1/2 years ago as Harpagochromis (Haplochromis) sp. "golden duck" which is obviously wrong. I've kept quite a few black Victorians over the years but never ones that look like this.

I know the chance of getting a definite ID is probably impossible but I gotta try before I give up on a 1.5 year grow-out colony.

you sure that is the true color of the species in question?

Could it be a dark color morph? Not sure what species it may be though....

The back of the tank is painted black and the fish is black. My camera flash washes out the color and makes it look kinda blueish gray. That's why I went with the video instead.

These lousey pics show the body shape but not the true black color. I have 4 males (all black) and 8 females. I doubt it's a dark morph of something since the parents were jet black and all the males are as well. The dominant male holds territory under a large rock and rarely comes out. The video is of the #2 male, not the dominant one.

I hate euthenizing them but I truly think they are hybrids. When you buy a Victorian from a seller that gives you a wrong ID, they are almost always hybrids. I have a few juveniles of other species that could use a larger tank so I'm not giving this ID thing a long time. I've heard from Greg and I'm waiting to hear from Christophe before taking action.

Kevin

I don't think golden ducks are supposed to have red tails. Mine also seem to have small mouths, not what a piscivore should have.

I had problems with hybrid ducks earlier this year. They looked quite similar to yours:

Sure is a pretty fish tho. I just went thru a mess with having to cull a bunch of fish that turned out to be hybrid... so difficult.
