yssichromis piceatus.

my group came from the euro/usa shipment thanks again allen and jim and marco and all the guys over seas.
the group consist of 10 fish, about 1 inch or less in size.
after two weeks on quarantine, they have graduated to there new home.
a 75 gal. species specific tank with sand substrate. some rock work.
in the two weeks they have been here, some have gone from plain little fish to begin to show some red in the tail and a lateral line.
the tank has a ph. of 8.0, they are being fed commercial flake and so far two treats of small amounts of blood worms {frozen thawed}

a short video of them.

Video seems to me to be easier than still photography. Fish do move, so video is a natural. You can always snap a still from a video with lots of choices. 8)

today the first spawn! :lol: :D :lol: 8) :D 8) :lol:

i cant get a pic of her she is hiding. two males were going at eachother, however no dammage done.
while i didnt wittness the spawn, observing the schol it appeared that the female seperated from the group and once he picked up she was ready he followed her. this am i kept seeing them go off to a little hide hold then they would re appear and join the group. it would seem that she picked what male to spawn with as the others colored up as well but the same one followed her each time.

i dont expecet many fry, i suspect not only limited by thier small size but i have a feeling they produce small spawns.

this week, the female is still holding and i see two more tubing. there are now two males that are colored all the time and three more that color and then become sub dominant. no losses with this species since thier arrival.

this species is truly vying for my most favorite of all time. thier scholing behaviour is most interesting. no male has staked a claim on a piece of rock or a territory, but rather take turns demonstrating alpha male coloration. with always a few just a shade lighter, and a few males showing almost no color. it seems that they all take turns trying to entice a female to the nearest flat rock. there is always a male flashing the females. but no real agression twards other males nor the resistant females. this tank is very active, but very peacefull twards eachother. its like rotating alpha males, and for what ever reason they will change rank and the one who was enticing the females will go almost colorless, and one of the other two males showing good color will color all the way and begin flashing females and a prior almost colorless male will take a more colorfull role, after watching them for several hours the last dominant male never went out of turn and waits for his turn, its very cool to watch.

here are some better pictures.
