I'm interested in your tank sizes. I see you all write about your 55s or 29s or 20 longs etc but apart from assuming that this is US gallons I don't have a concept of the dimension.

In Australia we generally talk about standard tanks or custom tanks. A standard tank is always 18" high and 14" deep. Only the length changes and of course we talk in centimetres. So a standard 6 footer is 72x18x14 (~300litres) and a standard 4 footer is 48x18x14 (~200 litres) etc. Then there are the customs which is obvious, tanks made to your own specs.

So what are the dimensions of your commonly used tanks?

I could work it out but that'd take the fun out of being on a forum where you can ask

Matt,

I think the single best tank for Vics is my TruVu 75 gallon long. The dims are 60"L X 15" H X 18" D. I wish I could find another one but TruVu doesn't make that size anymore. I actually inquired with them and they will custom make any size tank, the cost not being that much more....but their new tanks are expensive.

Generallly, I think Vics need at least a tank of 48" in length to be happy.

Hi Dirk

Yeah I'd agree with that.

I have my vics in 2 x standard 4 footers, a 6 footer and a custom 4 footer which is a biggie by 4 foot standards. It is 120x50x60 centimatres (360litres/95 US gallons) Also happens to have the least fish in it since it became an all male tank (except for maybe the clown loaches). Counting the loaches it only has 7 fish in it

I'm hunting around for more cheap 4 footers and a cheap 6 footer to go on my empty stands :)

Tanks here are expensive when new as well. Brand new standard 4 footer (equivalent to a 55US gallon) with sliding lids and 10mm glass is around $AU130.00.

Interesting comparisons

Most common tanks are 55/60 gallon's which are 4 foot.
They are the easiest tank to find around here, next to 10 gallons.

75 gallon 5 footers are great tanks, but they are rare, 100 gallon 5 footers are more common, but i think 6 foot 125 gallon are even more common.

i'd like to have all 75 gallon 5 footers for small/medium cichlid groups, 55 4 footers for fry/grow out and 6 foot 125 for bigger fish.

Here is what I'm running; tank #'s, gallons, length x width x height, in inches
2 30g, 30 1/4 x 12 1/2 x 18 1/2
7 20g longs, 30 1/4 x 12 1/2 x 12 3/4
5 10g, 20 1/8 x 10 1/4 x 12 1/2
1 75g, 48 1/4 x 18 1/1 x 21
1 55g, 48 1/4 x 13 x 21
1 90g, 48 1/2 x 18 1/2 x 25 1/2
So I have 500g up and running now, not counting the ones I haven't set up yet!

and my tanks have the following sizes in cm(!)

100 x 40 x 40 or 50 cm = 160 ltr. or 200 ltr.
120 x 40 x 50 cm = 240 ltr.
160 x 50 x 50 cm = 400 ltr.
180 x 60 x 60 cm = 648 ltr.
200 x 70 x 60 cm = 840 ltr.
