I had a 30g spring a leak so I gutted it and put another in its place, all rock, wood, sand and filter are from existing tanks. I threw it together about 2 hours ago and now I have this

Any ideas? Is it harmful?
This will be a pleco tank.... There are no fish in it yet.

Did you clean the tank good before you filled it?

It looks like spiderwebs. I seen something like this before. When I check tanks for leaks I'll let them set overnight full of water. One morning I saw this in one of the tanks, and it was a spiderweb.

I had my BF hose it out pretty good before I set it up, But spider webs are a possibility my house has a fair amount of daddy long legs in it.
So a good game plan would be to use a bottle brush to get most of it out and then add a tester fish?

I really don't want to have to kill everything on that bit of wood, its getting to look so nice with java moss and beard algae all over it..... well it did look good :?

I would put in a tester fish to be sure everything is OK. It could be something else.

My spiderweb was a black widow. It was the thick tacky spiderweb. We have are fare share of black widows here in the Valley.

Not spider web... It broke up way too easy when I tried to twirl it up with a bottle brush. And my BF swears he hosed it out very well.
I did add some flourish excel to help kick start algae growth for the plecos... Could that be it?

Weird, I saw this stuff last when I was about 5 years old in my tank ! It never seemed to harm the fish. When I first saw it I thought it was eggs from my fish (I was 5), but it was just this stuff that looks exactly like what you have Fern. Slimy, web like, cocoon like stuff that would cover things. What a weird trip down memory lane your pictures are :o

ok well here's hoping that it is from the excel!
It seems to have all gotten sucked up by the filter, I knocked it all loose last night. I just put in a red jewel so we will see how he does. If he makes it through the day I will assume its harmless. Then wash the filter out really good and do a bleach rinse on the filter bag (would toss but its my last one) soak that in dechlor for a few days and steal a filter bag from another tank and call it good.
My bn plecos are coming in tomorrow along with my zebra plecos..... I will wiggle some fish around so that I can put half of them into a different tank just in case.....
