Hmm... I hate having to move fish more than necessary, but if its necessary to put them into a different tank for now that's what I will do.

I believe iyt is anarobic bacteria. Have you checked the water parameters? Check a few days in a row to make sure your bio cycle is keeping up with the amonia and nitrites.
I would get this when my bioload was very light and I over fed. It would cover uneaten pellets that got left in. Could have been triggered by the wood.

The wood has been in use for about a year, there was no bio load at all when this occurred. There is now one red jewel juvy in it who gets 3 pellets a day. Not too much to keep up with....
It didn't act like bacteria when I handled it, I'm quite familiar with aerobic and anaerobic bacterias from working on septic tanks and aerobic treatment tanks... Didn't strike me as a type of bacteria.
