We have kept several different varients of Tropheus over the last few years with varied success, we still have Moori Bemba and Moori Moliro breeding groups at the moment.
They are great fun and it's always a busy tank as they bicker amongst themselves constantly as they have quite a strict family heirachy.

There is a 40 gallon breeder sitting outside down the street from me. Trying to convince the misses to leave a note on it. If I can get it, it will either be Tropheus, Discus, or ...???

I think a 40 breeder would be a bit small for Tropheus, just because generally it takes such a large number for a colony to be succesful, as well as space for them to get away from each other. Perhaps Discus, Gymnogeos, Geos, or many Malawians might be a better choice. You could also keep quite a few Tangs in that size tank.
