I am now running a reef tank  (scary I know)
Its a 55g main tank with a 55g ghettofied sump/refugium. water volume comes up to along 90g. So far it has about 10lbs of live rock with a few mushroom corals and a tiny leather coral and a yellow watchman goby named Cherry (read between the lines). I have a 48" t5 fixture with 4 bulbs, solar xtreme is the brand. I have some miracle mud in the fuge with a bit of macro algae. Spent 3 hours last night watching the live rocks with a magnifying glass looking at all the creepy crawly's! Very neat stuff! Here is a little video of the set up and yes it is a work in progress and will take some time to get it filled with the proper amount of rock and such due to the cost of salt stuff

Where is the banned button?

I will not touch salt water because of the cost. Have fun with it.

I'm just surrounded by bad influences, most of my co-workers are salt geeks and I work in a lfs that has some very awesome corals. Ya it is super expensive, I wont be seeing a paycheck for about a month with how much stuff I have gotten on credit at work
So far its really neat and I am learning a lot! And it will defiantly help at work with me knowing more about salt and having experience with it.

You can live vicariously through my pics Jim its ok

If you just stick with 2.99 damsels, which have many color forms, or 15.00 clowns, the cost is actually rather small.

The cost factor is when you try to start raising corals and inverts, due to the lights required etc.

It is actually easy and cheap to raise a 55 gallon of damsels and a clown pair.

Some more exotic species require specific foods, and are hard to keep alive, but damsels and clowns are very hardy.

Fern, I can understand working at a fish store and seeing too much stuff! Luck with your salt tank-if you start getting into corals, like Lobos, Brains, Hammers, look for ones from Australia. They are more expensive, but hardier and last longer. I do not keep a salt water tank, but our salt guys explain lots to me whenever I point at something and say "Hey, that's cool and it's still alive after being here for two months!!"

Doing soft corals for now, the hard corals will wait till this tank is full and I turn a 90g into salt
Got more live rock
Image
Just got 3 more emerald crabs, 10 blue leg hermits, 5 margarita snails, and 3 small colony's of zoas.... I finally got my 'is it nippy in here' zoas
Pics of the zoas later after they open up, they are still a little ticked from the move

so now the 55g is pretty full of all sorts of corals and has a yellow watchman goby, a red scooter blenny and a sailfin tang along with a shrimp and a few starfish and cucumbers and such.
I also ended up with a fully set up 125g in a trade. It has a gray angel (awesome fish) a engineer goby, a clown fish, a blue headed wrasse and a pain in the neck damsel that I think I finally found a home for.

I am working on setting up my 120g tall, its been marinading for a few months, went the slow way on it and put all my cichlid rocks and 3 live rocks in there and just let it all chill and grow. Its almost getting to the point where I can put something in it once I fine tune the plumbing on it and get the metal halides hung.
