starting to do some research, before taking the plunge into cichlidkeeping.

i've managed to keep "beginner fish" (ie tetras and livebearers) alive for over three years now, and my mom (who used to run an aquaristics shop in the 1970s together with my father) is starting to "tease" me, saying it's time for me to start keeping "REAL fish" (ie CICHLIDS)!

the guys in the aquaristic society which i'm a member of are malawi fans, mostly, but i've fallen in love with haplochromis sp. "ruby green", and so i'm trying to learn all i can about this beautiful fish.

is this a realistic choice of species for me, as a cichlid beginner?
would a small (how small?) group of them feel happy in my 67 gallon tank?

of course i'm planning to ask "the cichlid men" to help me prepare my tank for my fish, but: what are the main things i need to focus on when decorating/preparing my tank for the haplos?

Welcome to Victorian cichlids!

Ruby greens are a fantastic starter fish. They are fine in planted tanks or tanks with just rocks.

67 gallons is big enough for several males to color up. Get a group of 12 or so and they'll be very happy!
