I have been doing some research on this myself. What I have found is that they recommend species of the Vallisneria and Ceratophyllum. I do not know much about plants and I'm doing more research on it.

I am using several types of anubias (pretty much any anubias is fine), and Java Ferns.

Anubias Is a Good cichlid Plant in general, Cichlids Dont like the Taste of the Leaves. So they leave it alone. IT Seems To Grow Extremely Slow though.

yes anubias grows slow but it needs little light. so it is good for tanks not set up for plants. and it is pretty hardy so it takes a lot to kill them.

cryps are a good choice as well. but with their boisterous nature the fish can pretty much destroy anything. best to stick with fake ones in the long run.

I had good experience with Hornwart too when I first had my fulu. Unfortunately the only place to get it was petsmart though, so I had an outbreak of Ich, n had to toss the plant. It was a big one too that almost covered the entire surface of my 55. Still bummed about that. But they really enjoyed swimming through the plant.
